PROGRAM SUMMARY

Plaza de la Raza Child Development Services, Inc. (Plaza) is a comprehensive early childhood education program with a focus on school readiness for children zero to five years of age.  Developmentally appropriate services are provided for children from low-income families, zero to five years of age. Plaza de la Raza currently serves approximately 1,075 children and their families.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Teacher position for the Early Head Start Program promotes educational, social, physical and intellectual growth by teaching Early Head Start students; plans group and individual lesson plans, organizes activities, monitors individual student progress, conducts student observations; completes daily educational and attendance records; conducts parent/teacher conferences; and monitors individual student progress. The Teacher is responsible for the planning and implementation of a curriculum in the classroom that meets the Head Start Program requirements in preparation for primary school in preschool, day care center or other child development facility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A.  Education

Baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in early childhood education, child development, or related field required.  Must possess a valid California Child Development Teacher Permit. In addition, Early Head Start Teachers must have six (6) semester units in early childhood development with a focus on infant and toddler development. If at the time of employment, candidate only has three (3) of the six (6) infant and toddler units, the remaining three (3) units are to be completed within the first year of employment as it will be indicated in an educational plan upon employment. Must also have valid and current infant and child CPR and First Aid certification.

B.  Experience

Must have two (2) years of experience in a classroom setting or combination of two (2) years of experience in both classroom and group settings with young children under the age of five (5). Master’s degree may be substituted in lieu of experience.

C.  Physical Demands

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met, or are encountered, by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 

D.  Medical Examination

Prior to first day of employment, employees must submit an initial health screening, tuberculin (TB) skin test or chest x-ray clearance, immunization records for measles, pertussis (whooping cough) and  influenza. 

E.  Fingerprint Clearances

All potential employees will be subject to obtain fingerprint clearances from the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Child Abuse Index, Megan’s Law and System for Award Management prior to starting work. 

F.  Other Special Requirement

Must have the use of an automobile with adequate insurance coverage and a valid California driver’s license or have available private transportation.
