The Mental Health Coordinator provides overall coordination and training for the mental health component in the Child Development Department’s Head Start and Early Head Start Program. This role includes training staff in all program options on mental health techniques and strategies for ensuring that high quality comprehensive service approaches are utilized in serving children and families. A key activity for this position will be to train staff in implementing a comprehensive service model of support in each early learning center and program option. Another major area of responsibility of this position is to coordinate community partner Memorandums of Understanding with the Early Childhood Mental Health Initiative service provider agencies, and to ensure that children and families are served citywide in accordance with agreements.

A bachelor's degree in psychology, Social Work or related field is required.  

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead staff for ensuring Memorandums of Understanding with city wide Mental Health Consultation provider agencies are reviewed annually by each MHC agency by September.
  • Notify Program Director if changes to the MOU are proposed by the MHC agencies.
  • Serve as lead contact for collaborating with Mental Health Consultation provider agencies as needed.
  • Ensure that all MHC agencies that serve Wu Yee develop Site Agreements by September
  • Monitor mental health services monthly to ensure that all services contained in site agreements and MOUS are being implemented with quality.
  • Provide orientation on Wu Yee agency program and protocol to new Mental Health Consultants prior to the MHC starting at site.
  • Collect and monitor the Mental Health Consultants Services log to ensure consistency in service delivery and follow up as needed.
  • Track referrals made by Mental Health Consultants to ensure access has been gained by families.
  • Conduct an in person check with each Center Manager ion a quarterly basis to obtain feedback on the quality of mental health services being provided. 
  • Ensure that each Wu Yee site has developed a schedule for child consultations by September 30th.Train Wu Yee staff and Mental Health Consultants on a comprehensive services model to be utilized by staff in center based, Home based and Family Child care program options for best practices and service coordination.
  • Ensure that once sites have been trained on the comprehensive service model, that a rotating classroom schedule of child/family review team meetings are set up.
  • Train staff on how to provide behavioral support in the classroom for children exhibiting challenging behaviors.
  • Provide trainings in Family Services meetings, Center Manager meetings, classroom meetings and other meetings, as needed on approaches used in the comprehensive service model.  
  • Attend all Inclusion Team meetings.
  • Conduct regular monitoring of Mental Health component activities in center based, Home Visiting and FCC components, as directed by Inclusion Manager
  • Under the guidance of the Inclusion Manager, collaborate with Social Emotional Support Specialists on planning strategies for children identified for SESS support.
  • Collaborate with Inclusion Manager, FCP Manager, Regional Managers, Center Managers, Home Visiting Manager and FCC Manager on training needs for Staff, with particular emphasis on culturally relevant mental health wellness approaches.
  • Attend and observe all Child/Family Review Team meetings at each site for rotation of every classroom to ensure effective implementation of the comprehensive service model.
  • Serve as the leader facilitator of Child/ Family Review Team meetings if there are vacancies in the Mental Health Consultant role.
  • Monitor the implementation and follow through on action plans development in Child/Family Review Tea, meetings, during the initial phase of the model implementation at each site.
  • Collaborate with MHC and Teachers on developing practices for intervening with children with intensive needs. 
  • Serve as a lead staff for consultation and coordination of emergency crisis intervention strategies for children and families in crisis.
  • Meet with the ECMHI Coordinator for the city and county of San Francisco at least annually.
  • Produce a Child Development monthly report for the Mental Health Services area.
  • Will oversee the Implementation of the Teaching Pyramid Framework.
  • In the vacancy of an assigned mental health consultant, will serve as the mental health consultant at that site until one has been assigned. Will cover a minimum of one site per week for no more than 5 hours when a vacancy is present.
  • Develop as a postpartum assessment tool and trains the home visiting staff on the tools,
  • Reviews all two-week postpartum assessments scoring and identifies referrals as needed and ensures that referrals are accessed. 
  • Identify community resources for enhancing Mental Health Wellness needs for families and children, 
  • other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge/Experience/Skills Required:

  • Experience in developing trainings, workshops, and service plans for staff
  • Experience in working with low income, diverse families.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working in a school-based setting preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience in working with children in 0–5-year-old age range in mental health, social services setting required.

Education and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field required.
  • 3-6 Early childhood units preferred.
  • Must be PC literate; MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Regularly required to operate standard office equipment (personal computer, photocopy machine, fax machine, etc.)
  • Ability to work on a computer for up to 7 hours a day.
  • Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, and occasionally stand and walk, stoop, kneel, lift 5-10 pounds
  •  Close vision for computer usage regularly required to use hands to operate computers and other office equipment

Compensation and Benefits:

  • A competitive salary of $84,000- 87,000 Exempt.
