The City of Oakland, Human Services Department, Head Start Division is recruiting for two part time Food Service Workers. Uses a full range of culinary skills to prepare meals and snacks according to local, State and Federal guidelines for Head Start programs maintains accurate records and inventory of food, food service equipment and supplies; and performs related duties as assigned.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepare meals and snacks for Head Start children; participate in menu planning with staff and parents.
  • Follow Head Start Nutrition Coordinator approved cycle menus, standardized recipes and appropriate institutional kitchen policies and procedures.
  • Clean and operate kitchen equipment in accordance with local, State and Federal regulations; arrange for proper maintenance of all food equipment.
  • Receive, verify and sign for deliveries of supplies and equipment; store deliveries, including food supplies, according to State and Federal standards; monitor food supply inventory and report to Cook III when items need to be reordered; and update records of food supplies and equipment.
  • Set up meals and snacks for off-site delivery to Head Start sites.
  • Maintain kitchen to meet safety and sanitation standards and maintenance needs; follow safety and sanitation regulations in all facets of food handling.
  • Carry bulk supplies from the storeroom to the food preparation area.
  • Receive inquiries and concerns regarding food service delivery.
  • Identify and resolve routine problems; report problems to supervisors.


Knowledge of:

  • State & Federal Food Safety regulations
  • Standard food preparation and storage methods and practices.
  • Food Service Institution sanitation and safety precautions.
  • Standard measurements, serving and portion sizes.
  • Institutional/commercial food preparation and cooking.
  • Nutrition principles.
  • Different methods of cooking and preparing a variety of types of food items.
  • Basic mathematics including fractions.
  • Ability to:

    • Plan for food preparation activities by ensuring supplies and ingredients are readily available according to each recipe or meal plan prior to assembling and preparing meals.
    • Maintain food service operation inventory records, standard institutional kitchen production records and food sanitation logs.
    • Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds using proper and safe techniques.
    • Read and follow standardized recipes; identify and collect appropriate quantities of required ingredients.
    • Prepare food within specified time constraints and maintain portion and quality control.
    • Calculate standard measurements in order to extend a recipe.
    • Comply with safety and sanitation regulations in the handling and preparation of food.
    • Communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions.
    • Hear instructions at a distance of up to 20 feet in a noisy kitchen environment.
    • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.



    Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications may be acceptable.

    Education: Completion of high school (12th grade) or equivalent. Coursework or training in culinary arts or food service is highly desirable.

    Experience: One year of experience cooking, preparing and serving large quantities (100 meals or more) of food in a city, state, federal or large commercial institution (e.g. hospitals, colleges/universities, prisons/detention centers, military facilities, etc.)



    California Food Handler Certificate: Incumbents must obtain a California Food Handler card from an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited training provider that meets ASTM International E2659-09 Standard Practice for Certificate Programs within 30 days of date of hire. The California Food Handler card must be maintained throughout the tenure of employment.
