Position:  Request for Proposal-Registered Dietician (RD) for Head Start/Early Head Start

Location:                         El Monte City School District

Full/Part Time:                40 Hours per Week

Program Information:

El Monte City School District Child Development Programs seeks a Registered Dietician to provide services to Head Start/Early Head Start children and families in accordance with federal and state regulations.  Under the supervision of the Program Director, the RD will provide direct nutrition services as well as parent, staff and student education including professional development training for program compliance.


Ensures that children are up-to-date on an age appropriate schedule of well child care and provides expertise and guidance concerning the nutrition and overall wellbeing of Head Start/EHS children. Respond to RD referrals within the specified timeline. Ensure that children receive nutritionally adequate meals that address specific medical or nutritional need.

Essential Duties: 

  • Completes nutrition assessments, develops care plans and provides nutrition counseling and intervention, reviews nutrition screening and addresses high risk referrals.
  • Provides community and/or partnership referrals as needed and assist with linkage as necessary.
  • Participates in Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings as needed for student, parent and staff support.
  • Maintains, monitors, and tracks nutritional services in the Child Plus System and maintains deadlines associated with local, State and Federal requirements.
  • Develops written and training plans associated with local, State and Federal requirements.
  • Develops nutrition tracking plans and materials for staff and parents.
  • Prepares required reports as mandated by the office of Head Start, the Los Angeles County Office of Education Head Start Division and internal policies and procedures.
  • Maintains log with child’s name, sites, class and assessment finding(s).
  • Inputs and tracks student nutrition assessments and nutritional risks.
  • Participates in Head Start Health Advisory Committee meetings where nutrition and health program services are reviewed and makes recommendations for strengthening program services.
  • Researches, collects, and develops scientifically-based nutrition materials. Reviews and screens nutrition data for accuracy and use within the Department.
  • Conducts and/or facilitates delivery of nutrition programs and related events. Provides nutritional expertise for design and development of programs and activities.
  • Conducts in-service presentations with staff, parents, and students. Serves as a technical resource on matters of nutrition and wellness.
  • Monitors active Child Development Programs food service program to ensure adherence to Federal, State, and local nutritional requirements and maintains appropriate records.
  • Attends meetings within and outside the District to promote nutrition, for continuing education, and to gather information about emerging trends, regulations, and reporting requirements for Head Start and LACOE regulations, standards and expectations.
  • Collaborates with all Service Areas and maintains effective communication.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.


Must have excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills, be a team player, a passionate advocate for the child’s well-being, be able to work with diverse populations, and to network with other health and early childhood professionals to procure and provide needed nutrition services. Proficiency in Microsoft Windows Operating System and related software programs (Excel, Word, Power-Point, Publisher, Access, etc). Flexibility with work schedule to be able to work evenings and weekends as needed. Bilingual in Spanish/English is preferred. Consultant must be able to communicate effectively in written and oral form as well as have basic typing, audio visual equipment and computer skills. Have knowledge of ChildPlus tracking system and at least 2 years Head Start/Early Head Start experience working with children 0-5 is preferred.


Two years of nutrition experience in community health plus nursing administration and supervision. Pediatric nutrition education preferred. Prior Head Start/ Early Head Start experience is highly desirable. 

A minimum of two years’ experience working with young children ages 0-5 and their families. Also, experience working with program staff to meet nutrition mandates and requirements.  Experience and conducting trainings and workshops is referred.  


A Bachelor’s degree in nutrition and completion of a 1200 hour supervised practiced dietetic internship program and from an accredited educational institution.


  • Must have automobile with adequate insurance coverage and valid CA driver’s license to travel to all program sites.
  • Current and valid CA license as a Registered Dietician with Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Must pass a Child Abuse Index and Criminal Records Clearance from the Department of Justice prior to employment.

Required Documents:

  • Current and valid CA license as a Registered Dietician with Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Graduate degree from an accredited institution and official transcripts.
  • Live Scan fingerprint clearance
  • B. Test prior to employment, and every two (2) years thereafter (every 4 years for a chest X-ray).
  • Must pass a physical examination at the time of hire, and every 2 years thereafter.
  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Provide proof of the following immunizations as required: Measles, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), and Influenza.

Physical Demands:

The working conditions and physical demands of this position will be those that must be met to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. Normal vision and hearing, standing for extended periods, sitting for extended periods, kneeling and stooping, manipulating objects with hands, reaching overhead, and occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties. The physical environment the incumbent will work in is typically an office environment with moderate noise levels that would be expected in that type of work environment in addition to site visits and home visits as needed.
